Mitochondria under distress

Investigating mitochondrial dysfunction using solid-state NMR

Mitochondrial membranes are responsible for the fate of the cell. In prof. dr. Patrick van der Wel’s group at ZIAM, we investigated the role of a phospholipid called cardiolipin in degrading the cellular membrane, which has downstream implications for the cell’s life.

We utilized state-of-the-art solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance techniques to probe mitochondrial dynamics in the presence of a cardiolipin derivative associated with a rare genetic disease, seeking to understand the mechanism of the mitochondrial disordering implicated in the disease.
